NICK SMITH TO TAKE OVER D&E SWIM TEAM

ELKINS, WV – The Davis & Elkins College Athletic Department is pleased to announce the addition of Nick Smith as the head coach of the swim program. Smith, a Huntington, West Virginia native, will direct the men and women for the Senators.

Smith has served as head swim coach at Spring Valley High School for the last three years, a program he started in 2009-2010. The program at Spring Valley has grown from 12 swimmers the first year to 16 this year. This past season Spring Valley placed 14th among a field of 53 teams at the West Virginia state meet.
"We are delighted Nick Smith accepted our invitation to join us as we continue building the swimming program. In the past two years, members of our swim team- some of whom Nick coached in high school- have been recognized nationally for their academic performance. With one of the finest collegiate pools in West Virginia, we are now poised to attract even more outstanding athletic and academic talent to the program. We welcome Nick to lead that effort, "remarked President G.T. 'Buck' Smith.
Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts in History Education from the College of Education & Human Services. During his time at Marshall he was active with Baptist Campus Ministries and served as the Vice President of the Steering Council.
Athletic Director Ronnie Palmer stated, "We are excited to have Nick Smith as our new swim coach. His passion, energy, and love for swimming will have an immediate impact on our program. Nick also understands the importance of student; in student-athlete; he will hold our swimmers to a high level of expectation, both in and out of the pool."
Smith is excited about this opportunity and has several goals for the swim program at D&E. "I appreciate President Smith and the rest of the administration giving me this opportunity and we are going to recruit young men and women of character, who also swim well. A big part of competing at the college level is recruitment and we will recruit to win. The members of our program will be respectful, honorable and will value the team above themselves. We also will work to build a swimming program that competes in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference, "stated Coach Smith.
Smith will also work as an Admission Counselor at D&E and will officially start his duties on June 1, 2012.
